Chord Families

Notation:

  • The chord families listed here are based upon the Major scale. (i.e. Ionian Mode).
  • The chord families are grouped by their major and relative minor key signatures (i.e. Ab Major / E Minor - Both are four flats and have the same chords in the family.)
  • The chord sequences are listed above the chord names. The left hand value is the major, and the right hand value is the relative minor (i.e. I / III - I would be the first sequence in the major key, III would be the third sequence in the relative minor key.)
  • Sequence Number Meanings
    • Uppercase sequence numbers are played as Major Chords.
    • Lowercase sequence numbers are played as Minor Chords.
    • Exception the "VII / ii" sequence numbers are played as Diminished Chords.
    • The V sequence can either be played as Major or as a Dominant 7 Chord. (i.e G or G7)
  • The Blues scale is sligtly different. For more information, please visit Jazz Class.

I will not be listing the equivilent chord families for other modes. Please refer to the following chart if you want to use another mode. Please visit GuitarMasterClass.net for a full tutorial on how chord families work.
